This paper poses a question of its own, relating to whether the work of Giorgio Agamben suggests the possibility of a 'subtle revolution' that has the potential to ground a politics that is not based in a property or substance such as national identity, race or religion. Departing from Agamben's Introducing the figure of the 'workless slave' into the scenario of the Master—Slave dialectic, the article demonstrates how the dialectic of history may be ended in a non-dialectical fashion through inoperative praxis that subtracts itself from the struggle for recognition. From now on, the history of metaphysics, stripped of critical archeology, shows a smooth continuity and reveals a sort of perverse anxiousness (according to Agamben) to play with and explore the operative principle of ethics and the concept of virtue as obligation and duty that medieval theology had granted it in heredity.
